The Media’s Appeal To Emotion

Most media manipulation tactics have one common denominator: the justification of not doing real investigative work through an appeal to emotion.

That emotion can be:

1. ๐˜พ๐™ค๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™–๐™จ๐™จ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ: justifying unproductive measures in the name of good intentions, victimization to elicit protective instinct. ๐‘ฌ๐’Ž๐’‘๐’๐’๐’š๐’†๐’… ๐‘บ๐’•๐’“๐’‚๐’•๐’†๐’ˆ๐’Š๐’†๐’”: Good Intentions/Ideals, Single Perspective, Appeal To Emotion, Victimization

2. ๐‘ญ๐’†๐’‚๐’“: eliciting the fight/flight/freeze response in the body, eliciting response of waiting for salvation/solutions from above/powerlessness or at the other end, self-righteousness/entitlement. ๐‘ฌ๐’Ž๐’‘๐’๐’๐’š๐’†๐’… ๐‘บ๐’•๐’“๐’‚๐’•๐’†๐’ˆ๐’Š๐’†๐’”: The Hegelian Dialectic or Problem-Reaction-Solution

3. ๐‘ญ๐’†๐’†๐’๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐‘ต๐’๐’• ๐‘ฎ๐’๐’๐’… ๐‘ฌ๐’๐’๐’–๐’ˆ๐’‰: not trusting own impressions and relying upon external forces. ๐‘ฌ๐’Ž๐’‘๐’๐’๐’š๐’†๐’… ๐‘บ๐’•๐’“๐’‚๐’•๐’†๐’ˆ๐’Š๐’†๐’”: Authority Figures, Gaslighting, Validity/Invalidity Through Association.

This is the first part of the Tools of Media Manipulation course in which I discuss the fundamentals of media manipulation and how it relates to our emotional wounds. Before we are able to identify manipulative behavior we need to understand how our mind works and how we form belief.

I intend to create one or two more parts on Media Manipulation in which I will discuss each tool in detail (Labels/Frames, Assuming Reasons, Repetition, Authority Figures, False Opposites, Discrediting Dissent, etc).
